OS X Yosemite - a few tweaks!

I have now been using the latest installment of Apple's OS X Yosemite for a few days and I have made a few tweaks to it that I thought I'd share with you all!

My overall impression is that Yosemite is extremely slick and has a very well put together look.
Some elements are unfortunately not "good enough" for me though. Some elements give me the impression of not being quite finished.

Issue one: The Menubar.
The new Yosemite menubar is semi transparent and it's completely flat looking.  The light theme gives the menubar a discreet drop shadow, while the dark theme completely lacks a drop shadow!

Let me illustrate!

Light theme menubar:

The light theme menubar is as I said semi transparent. It has a white base color and it will take a tinge of the color of the desktop wallpaper as you can see in the picture above. This look is "ok" but it's not good. It's not as clean and polished as I expect from Apple. So I decided to fix that.. :)

Now.. my "fix" is a really ugly hack and it involves a bit of work in a graphics editor (I used GIMP) but it's very straight forward. What I did was I took advantage of the fact that the menubar is transparent and simply edited the wallpaper itself. I added a few gradients up on the top which - with the semi transparent menubar - slightly "shines" through the menubar and gives it a new look.

Like so:

The same modified wallpaper works just as well when using the dark theme of course!

First the original dark menubar which completely lacks drop shadow, it is just a black flat line basically..:

.. and this is how it looks with my modified wallpaper. Note that it's not pitch black anymore, this is because it's semi transparent and my modified wallpaper shows through slightly! Also note the gorgeous drop shadow:

NICE HUH!! :)

Issue two: The Dock.

The new dock is flat. It's ... flat. I'm sorry but this is not very slick and pleasing to the eyes. Not in my opinion.. I know a lot of people love this new look, but I don't.

This is what it looks like:

Now... there is a tool that you can download and install which enables you to quickly change the appearance of the dock, this tool also gives you the option of creating your own custom dock looks!
The tool is called cDock and can be dowloaded here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdock/

I installed it and enabled the old, Mavericks style, dock. Took less than a minute:

I hope you found this post helpful! Let me know if you have any specific suggestions or requests on what I should post in the new Tech section!

Home Office / Studio ALMOST done!

My home office / studio / boudoir is finally as good as done!

It has been helluva lot of work, let me tell you. It feels SO good to finally be back on track.
There are of course still a few bits and bobs that needs to be fixed, but the bulk of the job is DONE!

First a "before" photo showing the work space.. watch and weep..

And now: AFTER:

I have my video gear up on the shelf over the desk.
The light behind the monitor is actually a LED strip with colored LED's. They cycle through all colors in a smooth slow cycle. Very relaxing!

The video gear shelf:

The makeup side of the desk:

Hope you enjoyed! I am SO happy with how it turned out! I also have new carpet, it's HUGE and takes up almost half of the room!

What's left is some sort of "rack" or something to hang necklaces and headbands on. I am also going to have a roof lamp but have not decided on model yet. I want something cozy and not too bright.

Milani update!

So, this whole Milani controversy SEEMS to have got a resolution.

The wonderful Cinthia from BeautyTalkWithCin on youtube has been in contact with Milani (they actually reached out to her) to clarify that they indeed ARE cruelty free and that they are working towards getting some sort of certification, like PETA.

Follow Milani on Facebook to get all the latest information: https://facebook.com/Milani

You can watch Cinthias video here, and don't forget to subscribe to her on youtube!

Liebster Award Nominee!

A while back I was nominated to the Liebster Award by the awesomeballz Stacey from Polished Ways!

Stacey is down to earth, no bullshit, sarcastic, honest, I'd-love-to-go-out-and-grab-a-beer-with lady and I admire her work a lot. She has an active blog and she also vlogs. CHECK HER OUT NOW!

She sent me these 11 questions for me to answer! So.. let's dive right in to it shall we!?

1. What was your initial thought when you heard I nominated you for the Leibster Award?
Surprised, happy, honored!

2. If you could only have one beverage for the rest of your life, what would it be?
COFFEE

3. What is your most favorite beauty product?
Mascara, any non-flaking non-smudging mascara since my natural lashes are practically transparent.

4. If I said let's go hang out, what would you plan for us to do? I'm lazy, I don't plan things.
Beer, snacks.

5. What made you decide to write a blog?
I have had "blogs" since 1996 but nothing that I kept up, I was mainly interested in the coding part of things. Graphics, layout etc. I started beauty blogging since I realized this is the ultimate forum for swatches and more in depth reviews! It's also easier to search through, as an archive, than a youtube video is!

6. Are you mad at me for finding your picture and posting them?
No. :) Just happy that you didn't scan through my Instagram and choose something else. ;)

7. If money was not an issue, what is the first thing you would do?
Wow. Quit my daytime job and launch a cruelty free makeup and skin care line for mature skin.

8. What is your favorite and/or most time consuming app on your smartphone?
In all honesty it probably is Facebook. I wish it was something productive but I'm afrait it's not lol..

9. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
The US probably.

10. If Hollywood was going to make a movie about your life, who would you want to play you?
Me. I'm too much of a control freak to have someone else play me. ;)

11. What's one thing that always makes you laugh?
Animals, cute kittens, silly dogs. And eyeshadows. Nice, smooth, vibrant eyeshadows.

Hope you enjoyed my answers!
Now on to the next part of the nomination rules! I am supposed to nominate five lesser known bloggers! What I have decided to do is to post my nominations in a separate blog post.

So, yes. I WILL post my nominations for the Liebster Award but not here, in this post! Stay tuned!

:)
